WHEN GARAGE SALE BARGAINS TURN STICKY

An article published in the business section of the Miami Herald some time ago shed some light on garage sale treasures that could turn out to be traps. The question asked was:

“My husband and I are accountants who also collect art objects. At a recent garage sale, we bought a yellow gemstone labeled as a topaz for $50. We weren't sure of its identity, but since it was a fair price for a topaz of that quality, we bought it.

Garage Sale Lessons: Recycling, Sharing & Thrift

We thought you would love and support this too... A very interesting letter to the Editor at the NY Times from September 1995, read on:

To the Editor:

Yes, sometimes there are abuses of garage sales ("The Garage Sale: Loud and Tacky, or Suburban Imperative?," Sept. 3). But they have so many other advantages that municipalities should be trying to encourage them, not shut them down.

What not to buy "Used"

Upon reading online about recommendations on what never to buy used, a recent article surfaced published by U.S. News & World Report featuring 20 items you should "never buy used." How to Haggle and Negotiate Great Deals at Garage Sales

We've all heard the terms "barter," "haggle" and "negotiating," but knowing when to shake down a seller in price is key. Typically the best time to visit a tag sale is when it first starts, you know the saying, "the early bird catches the worm," in this case, hopefully you'll have a good find and a good deal. Generally sellers are not as flexible in pricing early on during the sale. Many of the more desirable items such as antiques, collectibles or electronics may sell at prices they're listed at and often times they're already discounted to the seller's lowest acceptable price.
