Estate Sale Emptying, Disposition and Transitions

Eldercare responsibilities and transitioning can be a huge challenge for anyone. After the bequests of the will have earmarked select possessions to be given/donated to beneficiaries and other items not willed have been chosen by family members, there remains the unpleasant and time-consuming task of emptying the home(s) of the deceased. One of the easiest ways to handle this is to hire a company or professional who specializes in Estate Dispositions.

Here are some tips when qualifying and determining which professionals in your area are best to choose:

GreenFlea Flea Market, NYC

GreenFlea has been operating for more than 25 years on the Upper West Side of Manhattan. It is among the first open air markets in the city. Combining both antique/vintage collectibles and new handcrafted items, it is a ideal place to look for something different to give or to keep. You'll find wonderful things at reasonable prices -- most of them not available anywhere else. Some of the handcrafters at the market will also offer custom-made merchandise, from jewelry to furniture to clothing. The vendors take pride in helping shoppers find just what they're looking for.

Cheap vs. Frugal

What's the difference between cheap and frugal?

Let's begin by defining each:

"Cheap" has many meanings in different forms; In it's simplest form, cheap means "at or for a low price." From an object perspective, it means "of little worth because achieved in a discreditable way requiring little effort." From person to person informally, it means miserly or stingy.

"Frugal" is an adjective, meaning "sparing or economical with regard to money or food."

Here's a good example of distinguishing the two:

Virtual Garage Sales take on eBay, Craigslist & Amazon

Differentiating ourselves from Craigslist:

  • Craigslist is an online free classifieds service open buyers and sellers on a global level. In the section “For Sale,” posted items are listed individually unless listed in the “Free” or “Items Wanted” category.
  • Craigslist clearly discourages on-line or virtual tag sales, however, you can advertise your “physical” tag sale in the "Garage Sales" section.
  • Craigslist does not currently charge to post an item in its “For Sale” section.

A recent LA Times article highlighted an amazing breakthrough in a new citywide program to promote reuse of second-hand items by beginning a citywide yard sale.

West Hollywood's city council decided to designate and promote one day each year as their "Citywide Yard Sale" to commence summer 2010.

Palo Alto's similar inaugural event in 2009 sparked 370 households to participate and members of the council in West Hollywood plan on developing a similar successful program.

The Seasonal Nature of Garage Sales

We all know the northern half of the United States can get downright frigid in the winter months, starting as early as November and lasting through March, but does that put a stop to people having garage sales? Upon asking some members and checking out some trends, unless there’s snow on the ground, people will still find a way to host a sale, whether it’s held indoors or just with the garage door open for a few hours.
