Having Fun with Junk

“In the junk business, you have to have an eye, a gut feeling for the good stuff. You also need the knowledge to know just how good your find is and you need to love the interesting and varied array of antiques. Unless you are already wealthy, you cannot make it as an antique dealer if you specialize in a niche area. Telling is not selling, you need to be able to sell and you need to accept the mistakes you make. I always say the junk business and antiques business is a gamble, but a much safer gamble when you’re armed with knowledge and experience.”

Valerie Arnett, also known as “Junker Val,” is the owner of Junker Val, a unique variety Home Goods Store specializing in Vintage Clothing, Antiques and Jewelry and is based in Fort Worth, Texas. Val’s services include Estate Liquidation Services, Appraisals, and buying and selling Antiques. Her store is just as unique as her charismatic personality, you’ll be greeted by her, her friends, sometimes a musician playing tunes right outside the door and some wonderful refreshments. If you’re bored on a Sunday afternoon, be sure to stop by to check out what Val has added to the shop in the past week and enjoy snacks and wine! Although the shop is only open on weekends, it’s a brilliant destination for antique and junk enthusiasts, you never know what you’ll find! You’ll also be greeted by Beckett, Val’s “Wonder Dog.” Junker Val is open only on the weekends and the store only accepts cash.

As a professional Estate Liquidator, Val’s own personal experiences (some not the best) has led her to start teaching others how to conduct professional Estate Sales. “It’s a business that requires a great deal of professionalism, knowledge and most importantly, compassion,” Val says. Her classes consist of hands-on experience and she requires you to “work your ass off” at a few Estate Sales that she hosts before being able to turn yourself loose and begin building a responsible and respected business.

The Flea Market Upbringing – “I became interested in the Antiques and Junk business at an early age because my Dad would take me to Flea Markets as a child. When things got rough in life, Val would frequent local Flea Markets, Estate Sales and Antique Shows where she would not only learn first hand, but also buy and sell her treasures. Val’s success in the Antiques and Junk business didn’t happen overnight, it took her 7 years and she was working nearly 7 days per week to build a business and confidence to provide services and treasures that others would truly appreciate and most importantly, pay for.

Best Garage Sale Find - “Mixed in with common costume jewelry was a 14K necklace with a gigantic amethyst stone and a ring to match, that was my best garage sale find ever!

Val says, “I am not rich, probably never will be, but I can’t imagine doing anything else.”

JunkerVal’s shop is located at 3458 Blue Bonnet Circle in Fort Worth, Texas. You can also check out her upcoming events and new finds on her website, JunkerVal.com.

Too Much Clutter

When was the last time you saw your closet floor or were able to find something in your closet in less than three seconds? For some, it’s probably been a while, and that generally means you have accumulated more clutter than you realize. Closet clutter includes all the clothes that you rarely wear, or may never wear again. If this is the case, it’s time to purge your closet! Too often, people wait until they downsize their home or lifestyle to clean out their closets and they miss great opportunities such as consignment or better yet, donating clothes for the benefit of tax write-offs! Our friends at 1-800-GOT-JUNK? published an article last year, titled, “Ten indications that it’s time to purge your closet.”

Which ones apply to your closet?

  1. You hold on to a shirt you wouldn’t normally wear, because you “could maybe use it for a theoretical costume party”
  2. You are planning on wearing some items when you lose or gain weight
  3. You haven’t worn some items in over a year
  4. You come across clothing you forgot you had
  5. You’ve been holding on to things because they “go with one other thing I have but I don’t know where that thing is,” but you’re hoping to find it one day
  6. You have an entire drawer of T-shirts that represents every volunteer opportunity or job you have ever had
  7. You keep damaged items because you will fix them one day (but you still haven’t gotten around to it)
  8. You keep every gift you get, in case you have a family reunion where you’ll need to wear that Christmas sweater dear Aunt Bertha knit for you
  9. You have more than one item of clothing per hanger, and a lot of hangers
  10. You can’t see the floor, and you aren’t even sure what color it is (or was)

If any of the above apply to you, it’s time to do some cleaning, sorting and donating. You might also want to package some clothes to take to your local Consignment Boutique.

Don’t forget, if you have other closets (attics, basements or garages) full of clutter, give our friends at 1-800-GOT-JUNK? a call right away! They’ve got the muscle and the trucks ready to haul your junk away!

Recycling Junk

Often after a big garage sale or estate sale there’s a lot of “junk” that needs to be disposed of. A concern many share is that this junk will wind up in a landfill and harm the environment in some capacity. Fortunately there are brilliant companies and entrepreneurs who are creating new ways to recycle many common household items that become junk. You can be assured when you contact 1-800-GOT-JUNK? (we highly recommend this junk removal service), that your junk will be properly handled and recycled. They’ve even taken extra steps to “compartmentalize” items in their trucks so that each section will be sure to arrive at the proper recycle station at your area landfills.

According to 1-800-GOT-JUNK?, more than 60% of what they collect is recycled, and that number is higher in some regions where landfill recycling technology is more advanced.

Have you ever wondered what the most commonly recycled junk is? Here’s a short list, and chances are you’ve got some of this “junk” hanging around your home – taking up space – time to recycle it!

Green Waste - yard trimmings, trees, branches, grass, trunks, shrubbery and brush

Household Items – food waste, packaging, clothing, light bulbs, magazines, books

Construction/Demolition Debris – lumber, concrete, asphalt, masonry, wallboard, roofing, insulation, carpeting, fly ash, clay bricks

Metal – iron, steel, aluminum, copper, stainless steel

Glass – bottles, building glazing, automobile glass

Plastics – packaging, bottles, empty drums, mixed plastics, HDPE, LDPE, PET

Paper/Paperboard – office paper, newspaper, corrugated cardboard, paper packaging, phonebooks, medium-density fiberboard, mixed paper

Tires – on-road and off-road vehicle tires

Universal Waste – CRT monitors, computers, electronics, fluorescent tubes, batteries, aerosol cans, personal computers, computer monitors

Appliances – stoves, fridges, freezers

Keep in mind most junk removal companies will not pick up hazardous materials such as paint or pool chemicals. Many municipalities have recycling days for things like paint cans and batteries, be sure you find out when these days are, sometimes there’s a small fee, but you’ll feel great about doing your part to save the environment and recycle your junk!

Don’t forget, if you have junk cluttering your home, give your friendly local 1-800-GOT-JUNK? company a call and they’ll happily help!
